MILITARY FACILITY DESIGN

Our history of providing structural engineering services for the Department of Defense (DoD) spans the life of the firm. Today, our structural engineering services are used for military installations throughout the eastern United States. Our projects include numerous facilities for the United States Army, Navy, and the Corp of Engineers. Our work includes hangers, aircraft control structures, barracks, brigade level headquarters, security gates, weapons loading facilities, SEAL training facilities, recreational facilities, schools, administrative offices, and single family housing.

Secure design is a primary concern of the DoD when designing and renovating facilities. AES has extensive experience in the design of facilities for Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (ATFP), including progressive collapse design and analysis. Our engineers utilize the latest tools and analysis techniques, while understanding the most current Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) and other applicable military codes. AES has extensive experience in hardening structures to resist the effects of a blast event. Static equivalent and non-linear analysis methods are implemented to design the structural components of a building’s exterior elements. With aging facilities, renovations present challenges to upgrade the structures to comply with the UFC. However, it is possible to retrofit existing structures to resist blast loads and to protect against progressive collapse, using a variety of applied systems including reinforcement with reinforced concrete, supplemental steel-framing, and applied carbon fiber.
